A collaboration with Forest Arts Centre (part of Hampshire Cultural Trust), the New Forest District Council and the Handy Trust.

“This project was part of a wider Hampshire Cultural Trust pilot, exploring how individuals and communities can have more input into cultural programming and planning in their local areas. The pilot was supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.”

For 6 weeks, MBN ARTS collaborated with both the Hampshire Cultural Trust and the Handy Trust in Hampshire. During this project we delivered a series of creative and expressive hip hop themed workshops for a group of young people from the areas of Hythe and Marchwood. This involved graffiti art, music production and street dance. Once the young people had developed their skillsets, it was time for their challenge, of designing a community mural for one of the local youth centres. The redesign of this space aimed to provide a more attractive and receptive environment to encourage other disengaged young people in the area to use the space.

The group first created concept sketches surrounding positive words alongside illustrative ideas that would further communicate the concepts and be receptive to their age range. Following this, the MBN ARTS team finished the illustration ideas, and helped the young people spray paint their designs onto the walls of the building! Check out what they created! To further connect with the local community and to show the older generations the positive impact the local young can have in their area, we have printed postcards displaying the images of the artwork they created, with a link to this post, and shared them around various spaces in the community.
