Noadswood School Mural Project

MBN ARTS were approached by the organisation Culture in Common from Hampshire, to deliver a creative project for Noadswood School, near Southampton. The aim was to provide a unique creative experience for a group of students from military backgrounds at our studio for 4 weeks, exploring the world of graffiti and street art. During these sessions they developed their knowledge and skillsets, including the key skillsets of spray painting, lettering and typography, character design, stencils and model making.

Once these skills were learnt, it was time for the final part of the project, designing a mural for their school to communicate their identity as military family children. From this conceptual designing session, our artist Jack Kellythorn took inspiration from their ideas and created the murals concept design.

Finally, we attended the student’s school and alongside the young people, painted the mural using all the skills they had acquired. The mural was very emotive and included a military parent and their child looking at themselves in a reflection, with their parent ready to go to war. The clock on the wall to represent the time their parents are away. A child blowing a dandelion as this is the national symbol for the military child. Then the reality of their parents in the war zone, with the hope of their return shown with the dove flying home.

What a beautiful project. All involved should be so proud.
